Allium odorum L. (Chinese chives) is a member of the onion and garlic families. Both its leaves and bulb are used for many dishes, especially in central Vietnamese cuisine.
It has many benefits for health, especially for the digestive organs and kidneys. Some Vietnamese people steam with the bulbs, much like how they do with medicinal herbs in order to relieve colds.

1. Cajeput essential oil helps prevent wind-stroke and cold:
- During seasonal changes, kids may easily get respiratory diseases. To protect your kids from wind strokes and colds, add 3 – 5 drops of cajeput essential oil to warm water and bath your kids every day. Be cautious to keep essential oil away from your kid's eyes when bathing.
- After bathing, you may massage the kid's back, feet, arms with cajeput oil which helps keep warm, bring pleasant feelings and deep sleep for kids.
2. Cajeput essential oil prevents and treats cough, wheeze and phlegm:
- Apply cajeput oil to the back (do not apply directly to the kid's spine) to warm the kid's body up naturally and this will keep them warm at night.
- When kids get cold or cough, they usually have a stuffy or runny nose, fast breathing causing loss of appetite and insomnia.
- Apply a few drops of cajeput essential oil to baby handkerchief and wear around their necks; put the essential oil under the nose so that kids can inhale (do not use directly on kid's nose); or place a few drops onto their pillows, use essential oil to massage on the kid's soles of the feet before going to bed, which prevents cold for kids.
- Use essential oil as steam inhalation therapy for sore throat and stuffy nose. Use a diffuser to help kids get rid of nasal congestion and breathe easier. Cajeput essential oil is an effective remedy for phlegm and coughs.
3. Cajeput oil prevents flatulence, bloated stomach indigestion and heartburn:
- Wheeze in kids causes dyspepsia and anorexia. Moms would rather give kids some watery soup, which is easier to swallow, than force them to eat. After that, apply cajeput oil to the back, rub around the abdomen in a clockwise direction and massage, which helps reduce dyspepsia and indigestion.
- In cases where cough and wheeze are not the reasons for dyspepsia and anorexia in kids, moms should rub cajeput essential oil around the abdomen, apply it to soles of the feet, kids will feel comfortable a few moments later.
4. Cajeput oil prevents and treats mosquito and insect bites:
- Applying cajeput essential oil (diluted in warm water) to a kid's skin helps prevent mosquito bites. If kids have already suffered from mosquito bites, apply cajeput essential oil to the bites, which helps reduce itchiness and swelling.
* CAUTION: Do not apply cajeput essential oil directly on the kid's eyes and temple area.
5. Cajeput oil has good antibacterial effect:
- To keep the air fresh without musty smells, you may diffuse pure cajeput essential oil in the room by putting cajeput oil on cotton wool and then place it in a proper position. The delicate fragrance of cajeput essential oil will linger in the air, which brings comfortable feelings and helps prevent kids from stuffy nose, wheeze, mosquito and insect bites.
- Diffusing cajeput essential oil with a DIFFUSER is the most user-friendly and effective way.
6. Pain relief:
- Cajeput oil may relieve pain and ease stiff and painful joints for the elderly or be used for massaging on muscles after work-out. From folk experiences, drinking a glass of warm water diluted with cajeput essential oil may reduce abnormal pain.
In conclusion, cajeput oil/ cajeput essential oil is very good for your kids' and family's health. Cajeput oil/cajeput essential oil is highly recommended by medical experts because of its safe benefits (different from other essential oils with their contraindications in many cases).
