The image of the buffalo going plowing together with the farmer is familiar to a lot of Vietnamese people. Did you know that in feudalism periods in Vietnam, this was a precious animal that must be protected? It was forbidden to kill buffaloes because they helped human plow and therefore brought uncounted benefits for the farmers. During Ly and Tran dynasties, anyone stealing or killing buffalos - even its own owner - will be severely punished. Those who were aware of that but did not accuse would also receive punishment.
